The Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Ever wonder why we have a fishing net hanging in our church?

It reminds us of the time Jesus told Simon Peter to “lower your net for a catch” (Luke 5:1-11). Jesus invites each of us to go deeper in our trusting relationship with Him. Simon Peter reluctantly responded to Jesus’ directive to lower his net for a catch of fish even though he had caught nothing all night long. Peter listened to what Jesus told him to do.

He trusted in Jesus even though he had his doubts. And, despite his reluctance, Peter carried out what Jesus asked and received an abundant catch of fish!

A great blessing awaits us when we, too, listen and respond to Jesus in the quiet of our heart, in the circumstances of our life and in reflection upon His Word in Sacred Scripture. Jesus is alive and walks with us as our Companion on the journey. As we receive Jesus’ Word, His guidance, His reassurance, often with a direction to act, He then invites us to respond practically – just like Peter. He lowered his net.

We may be reluctant or fearful, but Jesus will never lead us to anything that will harm us. Keep in mind that Jesus accompanies us through the power of His Holy Spirit to give hope, fullness of life, blessings in abundance!

I invite you to take Jesus up on His invitation to you and respond with trust, even though you may have some doubts or fears. Take the next step in your relationship with Jesus. What do you want Jesus to do for you? Having a deeper, personal relationship with Jesus is something unique for each one of us.

Check out what happened for parishioner, Paula Harris when she “lowered her net for a catch.”

Trusting Jesus in this way is exciting, dynamic, and yes, sometimes challenging. But, it’s well worth the effort because blessings will result!

God bless you!
