5th Sunday of Easter

You may have noticed that the statue of our Blessed Mother Mary is crowned with a wreath of flowers. This is because of the long-standing tradition in the Catholic Church to dedicate the month of May in honor of our Blessed Mother Mary. She stands out among all of the saints because of her special role as the Mother of Jesus, whom we also call - Mother of God, as we recite in the Hail Mary prayer. Still, she also serves as our spiritual mother and mother of our Church. Mary is a role model for us all having accepted God’s call to be a unique instrument in His providential plan. While we continue to celebrate the Easter season in this month dedicated to Mary, I offer you a poem written by Bishop Mark O’Connell, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Boston.

Mary’s Easter

Perhaps she searched the newborn babe To see His glory shine Perhaps she told the temple scribes This was not yet His time Perhaps at Cana she nudged too much But water became wine.

She stood aback, observed it all When He taught and when He healed She worried some when crowds did throng But no more could she shield She saw Him ride into Jerusalem And knew His fate was sealed.

At His feet before the cross She surely searched His face His glory only she could know Where others saw disgrace But she stood firm and gazed at Him Of doubt there was no trace.

But on this morn while others gasped She knows the time had come His glory shines unhindered now His mortal body gone God’s Son you are, have always been As Easter now has dawned.

God bless you!
