Something to think about this summer...

It’s wonderful to have warmer temperatures and more leisurely time to enjoy a slower pace, to have fun with family and friends outdoors, and maybe to embark on some exciting adventure traveling or just to relax at a favorite summer getaway. Whatever you find yourself doing this summer, why not include becoming a “wandering contemplative” by looking under the surface of the people you encounter, the places you go, and the things you see and do – to make connections with where God’s goodness, creativity and providence seem evident.

Let the Holy Spirit inspire you and see where that reflection takes you. It’s an opportunity to reflect on how precious your own life is and the lives of those whom God has blessed you with. What you and I are able to enjoy, and the beauty and goodness we see around us is fundamentally a gift not made by human hands. A wonderful game you can play with your children or grandchildren or even older family members is: “Where can you see evidence of God and His goodness?” I like to think of it as playing a spiritual version of “Where’s Waldo!” Let minds and hearts wonder aloud and celebrate what God is doing in our world and in our lives. Interesting discussions will ensue and engender a cause for celebration.

As Catholics, at Mass, we celebrate those things and much more. It’s only natural, when you think about it, to have a more solemn, communal celebration as a family of faith to acknowledge God for who He is, what He has done, and what He continues to do in our lives and in our world. Wherever you may be this summer, let one dimension of your vacation time be marked by opportunities for spiritual enrichment and expression, including the chance to say “Thank you” to God at Mass each weekend. Have a blessed and enjoyable summer!
