An Increase In Hope

This past week a reflection from a stranger confirmed for me an observation I have witnessed myself among members of our society lately. There seems to be a “pall” hanging over people these days. Do you feel it? It comes out in various forms. There seems to be a growing anxiety about the state of our world with the war in Ukraine, the Holy Land, and other troubled areas causing fear and uncertainty about the future of our country and our world, including the specter of nuclear war.

Then, there are the changing environmental conditions around the globe, which have become worse in recent years. In addition, there’s a frustration over the gridlock in Congress and an angst among many people about the upcoming presidential election. There has been a growing erosion of trust as various sources of information are put into question, especially with “fake news,” AI, and the threat of disinformation from foreign countries especially around election time.

Many youth and young adults have become addicted to technology, which has had detrimental effects on their ability to have normal social interactions. These same young people have also been experiencing increasingly higher levels of anxiety and depression. In fact, there aren’t enough mental health professionals to serve the growing number of people needing their services. Generally, people seem to be more easily irritated, suspicious and distrustful. Social alienation among so-called liberals and conservatives, even among family members, has only exacerbated the situation. That’s not to mention the divisions present within the members of our Church, including the hierarchy.

How do we deal with these circumstances spiritually? An increase in HOPE is the answer. Those without faith will not be able to understand. Our faith puts life in perspective and tells us that we are only passing through this life to a destination where evil, sorrow, pain, suffering and death no longer exist. Intuitively, we have a sense that things are not right with this world. We long for more. In faith, we have hope for a complete union with God where we will experience total love and acceptance, and lasting peace and harmony. One day we will be reunited with our loved ones who have gone before us. And, Jesus has shown us the way by His death and resurrection. If we put all our hope in what this world has to offer and seek transitory ways of finding peace and contentment, we will be greatly disappointed. Our hope is found in Jesus – and not only in the hope of eternal life, but also, in His abiding presence with us along life’s journey. We have hope in Jesus’ presence and power, His transforming grace, healing and peace – here and now! His Holy Spirit can work wonders that will sustain us even in the midst of our pain, heartache, trials and even in our sin. Hope grows within us when we open our hearts to Jesus and let Him show us a new way to live, a new outlook to have and a new awareness of his constant presence as our companion. Hope increases when we see and feel the love and grace of God active in our lives even in turmoil. If you need help with this, Holy Family will be offering ways for you to deepen your relationship with the Lord, which is the key to increasing HOPE.

God bless you!
